Transfer FIT Seminar
Building Community and Resiliency for Life-Long Success!
– Fall 2024 –
This course is designed to connect first-semester transfer students to the Charlotte campus community and teach resiliency skills that will serve them during their academic journey after graduation! Students will earn a Resiliency Peer Certification which is an evidence-based training program that has been demonstrated to build resilience, well-being, and optimism. Students will go through the strengths-based skill training as well as learn about academic support services and campus resources.
The goal of this course is to build a set of practical skills that can be applied in everyday life to navigate adversity and thrive in challenging environments, create community, and get acclimated to campus life.

- Campus learning management systems (Canvas)
- Advising & support systems (Connect/Navigate)
- Learn your way around campus
- Academic planning
- Academic support resources
- Community building
- Self-reflection
Transfer FIT Course Details:
- Transfer FIT is an immersive 3-credit hour experience that runs into the fall semester. Students must register for the FIT experience AND a first-half semester course to obtain the full 3 credit hours and the full experience.
- UCOL 1210-1 – FIT Experience for Transfer Students (2 credit hours)
- UCOL 2200-1 – University Learning Seminar (1 credit hour)
- Students must register for both courses to earn the Resiliency Peer Certification and participate in the full experience.
- The bulk of the experience and its commitments occur during the week prior to the start of the fall semester; giving students an opportunity to spend time on campus a week early. The second portion of the course begins on the first day of the fall semester and wraps up after the first half of the semester.
- Students with a housing assignment from Residence Life can move in early!
- Application for FIT must be submitted before July 12th to be eligible to move in early.
- Note: You do not need to be living on campus to participate in Transfer FIT!
- August 9th – 18th will consist of full days of presentations, community-building activities, and class time. Students must attend events on all days.
- August 19th – October 8th will have weekly in-class meetings along with online assignments.
- After October 8th you will only have your other fall course commitments.
Resilience Skill Set
- Self-awareness – The ability to pay attention to your thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and physiological reactions.
- Self-Regulation – The ability to change one’s thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and physiology in the service of a desired outcome.
- Mental Agility – The ability to look at situations from multiple perspectives and to think creatively and flexibly.
- Strengths of Character – The ability to use one’s top strengths to engage authentically, overcome challenges, and create a life aligned with one’s own values.
- Connection – The ability to build and maintain strong, trusting relationships.
- Optimism – The ability to notice and expect the positive, to focus on what you can control, and to take purposeful action.
